 Trashy Bags Africa is a social enterprise that recycles discarded drinking water sachets that litter the streets of Accra, Ghana’s capital, into eco-friendly bags.
 Over 1 million tonnes of plastic packaging waste is generated annually in Ghana, polluting roads, beaches and sewer systems. Plastic bags, in particular, have become a major problem due to the lack of recycling initiatives and waste management infrastructure.
 Every month Trashy Bags collects nearly 250,000 plastic water sachets that are cleaned and recycled by the Trashy Bag team into fashionable, iconic, usable products. And by giving value to waste, they promote a “Trade Not Aid” approach.
 With up to 70 sachets used for each bag and all waste left over from the process being recycled into plastic pellets, Trashy Bags Africa is at the forefront of sustainable development in Africa, having collected and recycled over 33 million sachets since it began.
 Trashy Bags Africa now employs over 35 people in the factory alone, creating local jobs with skills and is seen as a pioneer and leader in the challenge of alternative recycling of plastic waste.
