A new addition to the African-printed fabrics line. These are the "Wax Print" fabrics from the Ivorian brand Uniwax, joining the classic Wax Blocks that have been available for about a year now. These two-tone waxes feature only two layers of color, making them highly recognizable and often referred to as Ivorian waxes. The process is very similar to traditional wax: they are printed with wax, like their distant cousin, batik, from which they historically derive, then dyed with a process that guarantees extremely high colorfastness. Once the basic wax design is printed, the fabric is immersed in a dye to soften the contrast between the design and the white background. The fabric is then calendered to give it a sheen. Calendering is a finishing process that compresses fabrics between hot rollers to alter their appearance, sheen, and surface texture. It can give a smooth, glossy appearance, as in the case of Uniwax Wax Prints.
